The Falcondale Mansion was converted into a hotel in 1980 but the history of the house goes back over 150 years.

The bankruptcy of the 20,000 acre Peterwell Estate by Sir Herbert Lloyd at the gaming tables in London saw the formation of the Falcondale Estate in 1825 by John Scandrett Harford, a banker from Bristol. This was the start of a 130 year connection between the house and the Harford family.

The great Italianate Mansion that stands today was built between 1859 and 1870 by Scandrett's nephew John Battersby Harford. The Italianate style derives from John Battersby Harford's love of travelling, especially enjoying the magnificient architecture of Italy.
